Military Invalids
Today's Military Suffers Greater Injuries
Whenever a country becomes embroiled in military action, injury and death is inevitable. Military invalids of present-day wars suffer injuries far different from wars of the past. In those wars, military maneuvers were plotted on the ground and in the air in less sophisticated strategies. The enemy was easily recognizable. In today's wars, the enemy possesses weaponry that causes injury even with the most advanced-types of protection for military personnel.
Military Invalids Come Home
The rigors of military life during war time present the first phase of problems for men and women who are injured and return home. Switching off to domestic life after living in a constant state of surveillance of the enemy takes its toll mentally for these people. The second phase is learning to accept injuries that are life-altering. Learning to live as an invalid under accidental circumstances is difficult enough. When returning to domestic life is added to the military invalids' course of recuperation, the difficulties double.
Relearning Family and Relationship Values
The intensive training military invalids have received to perform their duties don't easily vanish from their minds. The environment of teamwork on such strategically-dependent levels that is the cohesive that makes military missions strong and safe. Military invalids have to "unlearn" that type of dependency and "relearn" to relate to their spouses and families.
Seeking Help
Many military invalids seek out group therapy offered by the military for returning personnel. Depending upon the seriousness of their physical injuries, these groups offer an opportunity to work through difficulties they may suffer from upon their return to domestic life. However, each town and city should also create programs that offer military invalids a chance to "refit" themselves into pre-war homelife. This is as simple as each town or city population insuring that military invalids are included in all activities they feel they can manage.
